About us

Bath School of Motoring was founded in 1979 and Lanham’s Driving School established in 1963.
The two schools merged in 1993 and is now a Limited Company.
The three Directors are Gary Payne, Innes Baron & David Merrett.
Gary qualified as an instructor in 1980 under the guidance of his father whom started the school & together they ran the business.
In 1988 Gary took over the running of the School from his late father still teaching & keeping up the good name that had been established over the years.
The business has gradually expanded to the point where we have a central office managed by Sue Merrett. The school has a number of instructors both male & female covering a wide area but still teaching in their local areas. Gary does little in the way of teaching learners now but is still kept busy by monitoring the present instructors & also training new instructors.
Gary also does driver training & classroom presentations for various organisations.

Innes Baron qualified as an Instructor in 1987 with the British School of Motoring and worked for them for three years gaining valuable experience of working with a large national company. In 1990 he joined us and by 1992 as he was such an asset he took up the offer of becoming a partner in the business. He is now a director in the company still teaching learner drivers but also doing other things in driver training.

David Merrett qualified in 1999 with the Driving Instructor College and straight away joined the school bringing a fresh approach and modern techniques in teaching learners as well as Instructor Training. He soon took up the offer of partnership (2001) and helped towards expanding the business to become a director. (2003)
Also his wife Sue is Office manager.
David still teaches learners but just like Gary & Innes he is involved in lots of other forms of Driver Training as well as running the school monitoring & training the Instructors.
