Q. Could you please clarify for me the position with regard to 20 mph speed restrictions around schools? Is it true that they are only operational when the school is open?
A. Each local authority is responsible for setting speed restrictions on their roads. Some local authorities use a sign saying it is a 'school zone', together with a variable speed limit sign with flashing amber lights indicating a 20 mph limit which can be changed to 30 mph outside school hours. There will be another sign underneath giving times when the 20 moh limit is in operation. Other authorities impose a permanent 20 mph zone, with a 'exit' sign indicating the point where drivers can revert back to 30 mph.
